Washable Nappy Rubbish (......click to go back)

If mum has the time and energy to undertake the washing
of reusable baby nappies, that's great.

However, in Ireland in 2007, mum suffers the pressure
of day-to-day living, with long travel times, extended work
hours, and little time to spend with baby.

In their efforts to get others to buy washable nappies,
or to make mum conform to their view of what is
right for the environment, some people have put up websites
that blame mum for wrecking the environment if she doesn't
use washable nappies.

Their big claim, that washable nappies are better for the environment
than disposable nappies, has been tested again and again.

This claim has not been supported by independent expert review.

In 2005, the UK's Environment Agency set up a large panel of
experts, including some from the washable nappy industry and
laundries, and from the disposable nappy industry.

They spent a lot of time and money analysing the effect of
both kinds of nappy systems on the environment.

Their conclusion can be summarised very simply:

Neither washable nor disposable nappy systems are better
or worse for the environment than the other. They simply affect
different parts of the environment to a different extent.

Ecobaby says that mum should not burden herself with guilt
if she feels that disposable nappies are the right choice for
her busy lifestyle.

With the Moltex Eco Nappy, mum is making the right choice.
Made with environmentally friendly unbleached materials,
and a high percentage of regrown natural ingredients,
including much of the plastic, the Eco Nappy is clearly
superior to washable nappy systems, and better for
the environment than ordinary disposable nappies.

Mums using washable nappies in Ireland know too well
the amount of energy needed to wash and dry their
nappies in our difficult climate. Electricity in Ireland
is generated with large amounts of fossil fuels,
and even peat is burned to make our electricity.

Our water supply is teetering on the brink of collapse, and
water shortages can happen at any time of the year. Even the
extra waste water from additional laundry is a problem, as
so many water treatment plants are overloaded. Many rural
homes are not on municipal water treatment systems, so
additional nappy laundering puts pressure on already-groaning
septic tanks, increasing the risk of water table pollution.

Do we need to mention detergents and bleaches?

For many years, the Eco Nappy from Ecobaby
has been shown to be a simple solution to allow
mum to care for her baby in comfort and safety, with
respect for the environment, and in a way that fits in
with her modern lifestyle.
